The main concern of parents is undoubtedly the health of their children. For this reason, they look for the most effective and least painful solutions to treat each discomfort they may have.

One of the aspects that we take care of from the moment they first appear are the teeth, which we teach them to clean and brush gently.

However, what happens if they present dental alignment problems?

In this article, we are going to talk about one of the most effective options for this problem: invisible aligners.

As you will see, this is a very comfortable orthodontic treatment that offers great advantages for both children and teenagers.

What are invisible aligners?

Invisible orthodontics is an innovative cosmetic dentistry technique, the aim of which is to reposition teeth using invisible aligners. Therefore, these transparent splints help to put teeth that are misaligned in the right place.

Invisible aligners are custom-made and are adapted to the needs of each patient. They are changed approximately every 10 to 15 days.

The main advice for you to see the desired changes in your children is to follow your dentist’s instructions.

Is the treatment painful?

Invisible aligners are designed to provide greater comfort and less discomfort, perfect for children and teenagers. However, it is likely that your little ones may feel a slight discomfort for the first few days of treatment.

This is because the teeth are being modified from their previous position, making them more sensitive.

Several days after the aligners have been fitted, the teeth begin to adapt to their new position. In this way, the patient starts to get used to them until they do not even notice them.

Comparing its advantages with other types of orthodontics, we could say that, for example, the metals of the brackets, at the beginning of the treatment, can cause chafing, discomfort, pain or even sores and wounds. Invisible orthodontics, on the other hand, does not have this type of discomfort, which is one of its main advantages.

Main advantages of invisible aligners

Invisible aligners emerged as the main alternative to the orthodontic treatment that already existed: braces.  As such, they have great advantages over the traditional method.

Aesthetic treatment

These are very aesthetically pleasing transparent covers that are not visible to the naked eye. Most people will not notice that the child is wearing them.

Removable

The splints can be removed for eating, drinking or brushing teeth. It is important to mention that, in order for the aligners to have the expected effect, it is necessary to respect the indications for use given by the orthodontist.

In other words, for the treatment to work, it is necessary to wear them for approximately 22 hours a day.

Comfort

They can be taken off and put on at mealtimes. However, proper hygiene must be taken into account when using them. In other words, it is mandatory to brush your teeth after every meal before putting the aligners back in.

Personalized splints

The treatment is completely customized, it fits perfectly and, therefore, times can be shortened.

Does not interfere with speech

It adapts perfectly to the teeth so that it does not interfere with the articulation of speech.

For people with metal allergies

With fixed brackets, metal is used to make the orthodontics. With invisible aligners, however, any discomfort caused by metals or their irritation is avoided.

Oral hygiene maintenance

This technique allows good oral hygiene to be maintained, as it is designed to be a clean and effective treatment. This is because the aligners are removed for eating, which prevents food residue from remaining in them.

You can eat whatever you want

If with traditional braces certain foods must be avoided (sandwiches, nuts, very hard nougat…), with aligners it is not necessary to restrict the diet. Patients will only have to take them off to eat.

Conclusions

As you have read, invisible aligners are orthodontic splints that are practically imperceptible. And another of their main advantages is how easy they are to use.

The fact that they are removable guarantees good oral hygiene. However, it is essential to bear in mind that clear aligners are a treatment that requires a high degree of commitment on the part of the child.

In other words, if they are not worn for the time indicated by the orthodontist (22 hours a day), the treatment will not meet the planned objectives.
